Badminton World Record Attempt Raises over £800

A fun day was had by all on Saturday 7th August when residents from across Buckinghamshire took on the challenge of setting a new world record of holding the longest, continual badminton rally.

Unfortunately we just missed out on beating the current world record with our best attemot being 73, but did however manage to raise more than £800 for WheelPower and the Aylesbury Community Badminton Network.

Even though we didn’t set a new record, it was a fantastic day and great to see so many people enjoying the sport; we hope more people will now feel encouraged to take up badminton and come down and give our weekly classes a go.

120 people took part in attempt to break a Badminton World Record on Saturday 7th August at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, including Team England Badminton player Alyssa Lim. The world record was ‘most participants in a badminton rally’ and the current record stands at 96 individual shots. The rally had to be continuous, with a different player hitting each shot, and only one person on either side of the court at any one time. Quite a challenge! Unfortunately a new world record was not set, although a brilliant effort was made with 73 continuous hits!

Alyssa Lim, England player ‘it’s a shame that we didn’t set a new world record, but just the fact that we had enough people here to actually attempt it shows that badminton is heading in the right direction’.

Nina Bridge, BADMINTON England ‘we didn’t break the record this time, but the event really helped raise the profile of badminton in the area, attracting many new players into the game, whilst also raising over £800 for Wheel Power and Aylesbury Community Badminton Network. Badminton Wycombe are already set to try and break this World Record and the majority of players taking part on Saturday want to be involved again; next time we’ll smash it!!’

BADMINTON England are running ‘Return to Badminton’ programmes to get new players into the game. If anyone would like to know more about badminton in Bucks or Oxfordshire, please call 07901 005 320 or email ninabridge@badmintonengland.co.uk
